  1. As some of you may have read in Paul Merenbloom's LAN Talk column
  2. in the latest InfoWorld (2/21), there are some exciting new
  3. developments in the MHS-based e-mail community.
  4.  
  5. Before too many rumors start flying around, I wanted to take a
  6. minute to share the following press release first hand with MHS
  7. users.
  8.  
  9. But first a brief introduction.  Connect2 is a new MHS compatible
  10. message router from Infinite Technologies, being announced this
  11. week, for planned shipment during the month of March.  (NOTE:
  12. The product name Connect2 is usually spelled with a superscript 2.)
  13.  
  14. What we mean by "MHS compatible" is the following:
  15.  
  16. 1.) Applications and gateways can interact with the Connect2
  17. message router, as if they were interfacing to MHS 1.5.  Connect2
  18. is an SMF-70 message router, with limited support for certain
  19. SMF-71 extensions, such as the SMF_NS.XRT extract file.
  20.  
  21. SMF-64 and SMF-70 gateways and applications are supported.  Many
  22. SMF-71 gateways and applications will also be supported.
  23.  
  24. 2.) Connect2 can communicate across a network link to MHS 1.5 or
  25. NetWare Global MHS hosts.  It can also communicate asynchronously
  26. with MHS 1.2, MHS 1.5, NetWare Global MHS, and Remote MHS 2.0
  27. hosts, as well as other Connect2 hosts.
  28.  
  29. Of course, offering compatibility with MHS, and 3rd party SMF-
  30. based applications and gateways, is only part of the story.
  31. Connect2 is *not* an MHS clone, as it also offers quite a few
  32. enhancements and additional capabilities, based on the feedback
  33. provided by current MHS 1.5 users.
  34.  
  35. Exciting new features of Connect2 include multiple COM port
  36. support (4 ports are supported simultaneously on a single message
  37. router), the ability to have multiple message routers all capable
  38. of running gateways and initiating outbound calls, and security
  39. features to limit access to mailing to selected gateways, hosts,
  40. users or distribution lists.  But, there's also a lot more.

  42. Our intent with Connect2 is NOT to start a war between Connect2
  43. and MHS or Global MHS.  It is our intent that Connect2
  44. compliments the Novell MHS messaging products, and offers a
  45. solution that may appeal to some messaging users.
  46.  
  47. Rather than competing with the Novell MHS products, we see this
  48. as an opportunity to further promote the MHS environment, and the
  49. innovative applications that have been developed around the
  50. Standard Message Format (SMF).
  51.  
  52. The MHS environment has always been about picking the
  53. applications and gateways that best suited the messaging needs of
  54. the customers.  With Connect2, we believe that we are extending
  55. this flexibility to give users an opportunity to select the
  56. underlying message transport that best meets their needs.
  57.  
  58. With some e-mail vendors attempting to lock users into proprietary
  59. solutions, we hope that the announcement of Connect2 will help
  60. underscore the importance of open messaging.

  91. Connect2 for High Performance Messaging
  92.  
  93. OWINGS MILLS, MD -- Infinite Technologies announces Connect2,
  94. offering customers a new alternative in messaging. Connect2, an
  95. MHS compatible message router, replaces MHS for those users who
  96. are unable to upgrade to an NLM based messaging system.  It
  97. offers higher performance, greater system reliability, and
  98. compatibility with over 150 existing SMF compatible applications,
  99. including products like BeyondMail, Da Vinci eMail, and Infinite
  100. Technologies' own ExpressIT!

  102. Connect2 supports both NetWare and non-NetWare environments like
  103. LANtastic and LAN Manager.  Connect2 is compatible with existing
  104. MHS and Global MHS installations.  Applications that run on
  105. Connect2 are upwardly compatible with NetWare Global MHS, in case
  106. network and communication needs grow.
  107. Connect2 offers advanced messaging features so that LAN mail
  108. administrators can control their systems for more efficient
  109. message exchange.

  111. *  Simultaneously route messages, execute gateways, connect to
  112. internetwork hosts, and make dial in/dial out connections via
  113. multiple communication ports.  -- These capabilities provide
  114. quicker and more cost-efficient message exchange than previously
  115. available.

  117. *  Restrict access to hosts and gateways to prevent unauthorized
  118. use.  -- This lets you control the use of fax gateways and limit
  119. access to secure hosts.

  121. *  Simplified passive host administration, and advanced
  122. scheduling of gateway execution and connections to other hosts.
  123. -- Advanced features simplify host setup and communications.

  125. *  Message tunneling. -- Maintain message formatting through
  126. alternate service providers.

  128. *  NetWare specific messaging improvements. -- Automatically
  129. import new NetWare users from the bindery without manual
  130. intervention, sender validation to authenticate that the "From:"
  131. address in messages matches the NetWare user ID that created the
  132. message.

  134. *  Automatic Directory Synchronization. -- Exchanges user names
  135. and routing information with other Connect2 hosts so that users
  136. may select recipients on other hosts from address book lists
  137. rather than typing in the names.

  139.  "Our goal, based on the feedback of many MHS users, is to offer
  140. customers increased performance, reliability, and control over
  141. their messaging environment," stated Mark Wilson, Vice President
  142. of Marketing at Infinite Technologies.  "Connect2 does that and
  143. more.  Customers who are committed to an open messaging
  144. environment will see real improvements for their network

  153. e-mail front end and the message transport from a variety of

  156. buy the e-mail front end, the transport, and gateways from a
  157. single vendor," said John Madill, President of Infinite

  159. and the MHS developer community to provide complete
  160. interoperability with current and future versions of Netware MHS

  163. Beta Users Respond
  164.  
  165. Beta users are enthusiastic about Connect2.  Randall Young, of
  166. Hallmark International reports, "It is wonderful to see a product
  167. with the open architecture of MHS that includes advanced message
  168. routing and host connectivity.  We are on a LAN Manager network
  169. and have been waiting for the capabilities that Connect2 gives
  170. us.  Infinite has integrated many user friendly functions into
  171. the Connect2 product that will benefit everyone, regardless of
  172. the network operating system being used."

  174. Kevin Stricklin, of Teleco, Inc. comments, "Finally the MHS
  175. upgrade I've been waiting for!  Connect2 has the enhancements
  176. I've needed, supports all modems, includes 16550 UART support,
  177. notification of new e-mail, and host & gateway scheduling.  I now

  188. Connect2 Gateways

  190. The company is also introducing a series of gateway products for
  191. Connect2.  These products can be installed in a Connect2, MHS or
  192. Global MHS environment for connectivity to a wide range of
  193. systems and services.

  197. *  Connect2FAX   Users can send outbound faxes from their desks
  198. as easily as sending an e-mail message.

  200. *  Connect2UUCP  Dial into UNIX hosts, including the Internet,
  201. and exchange mail.  A non-interactive method of connecting to
  202. UNIX hosts.
  203.  
  204. *  Connect2SMTP  Integrate your environment with SMTP, the native
  205. messaging protocol for the Unix environment, including the
  206. Internet.
  207.  
  208. *  Connect2Mail  Links users directly to MCI Mail, the most
  209. widely recognized public electronic mail system in the world.
  210.  
  211. *  Connect2Pager  Extend your e-mail system to include
  212. alphanumeric pagers through a paging service.
  213. *  Connect2FACSys Users can send and receive faxes using the
  214. popular FACSys software.  It's the best choice for high volume
  215. fax environments.

  217. *  Connect2Rules  Improve the speed and efficiency of mail
  218. handling.  Create rules to automatically process messages.

  220. Brett Warthen, CEO of Infinite Technologies stated, "Our

  225. Release Schedule
  226.  
  227. Connect2 is scheduled for release by the end of this quarter.  A
  228. remote version of Connect2 will follow.  The first two gateway
  229. products, Connect2FAX and Connect2SMTP, are available
  230. immediately.  The remaining gateway products are expected to ship
  231. during the 2nd quarter. Connect2 and the Connect2 Gateway
  232. products will be available in 30 day evaluation versions so that
  233. users can try the products in their own environment.

  236. Technologies' resellers.    The company will offer Connect2 and
  237. the gateway products on an OEM basis to qualified software
